Anesthesia Consultants of Indianapolis (ACI) Obstetrical Anesthesia section is comprised of 45 staff anesthesiologists. Our subspecialty provides 24/7 365 days per year in hospital coverage to the labor and delivery units of Indiana University Health (IUH) Methodist, West and North Hospitals. We administer anesthetics to the 6800 pregnant women who deliver their infants at the three obstetrical units. At the Methodist Hospital campus, ACI actively participates in the Indiana University School of Medicine anesthesia residents’ education by expanding their knowledge base and anesthetic skills as it relates to the care of the pregnant patient.
Dr. Janet Wendeln is the Obstetrical Anesthesia Director at IUH Methodist and North Hospitals. Dr. Wendeln has 30 years of experience in providing anesthesia to pregnant women. She is an active member of the Society of Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP) and attends the annual meeting.

Dr. Wendeln at IUH North, and Dr. Riegner at IUH West, teach the anesthesia portion of the childbirth education classes to the expectant mother and her support person.
OB Anesthesia is unique because we are anesthetizing 2 patients at the same time. Our focus is safe passage for mother and baby. We administer anesthetics to pregnant women in every trimester of pregnancy, for surgeries directly related to the pregnancy as well as for those not related. At the time of your delivery ACI has the training and experience to provide expert regional anesthesia (epidural, spinal or a combined spinal epidural anesthetic) or general anesthesia. If you deliver your infant by cesarean section (C/S) ACI provides post-C/S pain relief through regional anesthetics or acute pain block techniques.
